Artist Statement

My work is focused on creating a dialog on social political issues relating to poverty, equality, race, gender, spiritual and other ideological power relationships. Being Meztiso (of european and indigenous decent) in America comes with many issues, all of which are prevalent in my work. Issues dealing with identity, history, and social justice are at the fore front of my concerns. By working my out my thoughts through different media I can more clearly convey my messages through to the viewer. To me Art's most critical role in society is to teach, inspire, and inform therefore it is important that my art be accessible to not only to the modern critic but also to the 5 year old on a school field trip at the museum.

My Story

After high school I moved to Northern California to study, and after a few great years I graduated in May 2007 from Humboldt State University with a degree in fine art and art history. During my final semester I received the award for “ Outstanding student in fine arts 2006-2007” and received a commission from the city of Arcata, to design and build a permanent public sculpture made of steel and cast bronze which was installed in May 2007 in the town's square. Erecting a public sculpture in the city where I earned my degree has been a true honor. My goal as an artist is to continue to use my talent as a tool to enrich communities throughout the Americas and the rest of the world.
